Is Your Roof Breathing?

Who Cares If My Attic is Hot Or Cold?

Making sure that the attic is breathing is often the last thing on a homeowner’s mind, but some major issues can be avoided if the attic is properly ventilated. Of course, we want to make sure the roof keeps all the weather out, but an air-tight seal can also trap hot and cold air in your attic. In extreme weather months (summer and winter) the possessions stored in the attic may be at risk. Just think about what your old year book may look like when the temperature hits 160 degrees? In the winter months, frost from the underside of your roof will thaw and end up dripping water on all your possessions. A roof that isn’t breathing properly can also cause your utility bills to increase. Although, you aren’t heating or cooling your attic the hot or cold air in your attic will eventually seep into the rest of your home.

How Do I Make Sure My Roof is Breathing?

Depending on the size and style of your home, there are several different options to get your home breathing again.

  • Ridge Vents – Ridge vents are installed along the roofline of your home and allow hot air out of your attic without letting the elements in.
  • Soffit & Fascia – No only do soffit and fascia add some appeal to the exterior of your home they also work together to keep your home cool and keep unnecessary moisture at bay.
  • Gable Vents – These vents are visible on the exterior wall of your attic and create proper air circulation, especially during the extreme weather months. Not only do gable vents allow your attic to breathe, they also give some style to the outside of your home.
  • Powered Ventilators – There are many different sizes and types of roof mounted ventilators. All of them are designed to pull the unwanted air out of the attic.

No matter what solutions work best for you, a properly ventilated roofing system will add years to the life of your roof and help make your home much more energy efficient.
